Do You Sacrifice Your Health For Wealth?
The Dalai Lama, when asked what surprised him most about humanity, he said:
“Man.
Because he sacrifices his health in order to make money.
Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.
And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present;
the result being that he does not live in the present or the future;
he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
We miss out on the every day beauty of our lives because we are so consumed by the past and future concerns.
Sometimes, it can be almost impossible to live in the present where we should be. We let our thoughts consume us and focus too much on what could be or what could have been. This is not only unproductive for the mind, but also unhealthy. It causes unnecessary stress. We have to make a continuous, deliberate effort over time to focus present moment awareness.
You only get this life. Are you making the most of it? Or are you going through the motions and simply getting by?
Our standard of living is so rushed from one task to the next. We live in a state of over-consumption of information, food, media, projects, tasks and chores. It’s so fast paced that by the end of the day we collapse on the couch.
The problem is we’re not meant to function this way. We’re not able to handle the stresses of never-ending overload. As a result, we end up stressed out, burnt out and unhappy.
We can learn to slow down and sharpen our attention. What we choose to focus on becomes our reality. Bringing ourselves to present moment allows us to become more effective with whatever we’re doing.
So instead of letting our attention be pulled in a million different directions, we can focus on the task at hand. Whether it’s a conversation or a work project, we can choose slow down and focus our attention on this one task.
Learn to move at a slower pace and narrow your attention. This will bring happiness to your life.
